Track Of The Day: Where Is My Mind? – Pixies

The Pixies

‘Where Is My Mind?’Pixies – Surfer Rosa (1988)

This indie-rock tune is one of the Prettiest ixies’ most well-known songs. The track, written about lead singer Black Francis’ scuba diving experience in the Caribbean, has been featured in so many films and shows, but its most famous appearance is in the 1999 classic Fight Club.

This song is an oldie, but I have been listening to it religiously for the past few weeks after hearing Calpurnia’s cover of the song.

Sidebar: Calpurnia is the indie-rock band of Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard.

The vibrant, high-pitched riffs and steady drum pattern in the song is emphasised by the indie-rock spoken word vocals. The track is unpolished and raw, and sometimes seems so out of time and tune, but is the perfect combination of disjointed and infectious. The track is quite the masterpiece.
